Summer is drawing to a close, but there’s still time to cruise! Join National Lighthouse Museum members and friends on Saturday, September 15, for a journey up New York’s East River through Hell Gate to Long Island Sound. Expert presenters will be on board to share the history and little known facts of the lighthouses and sights along the way. Cruise as far as Execution Rocks Lighthouse in the Sound and learn of its gruesome past and haunted present. Also included will be Stepping Stones Lighthouse in Long Island Sound.
The boat will leave from Pier 1, St George, Staten Island, adjacent to the museum. The tour leaves at promptly at 11:00 a.m. Refreshments are available for purchase on board.
Tickets are $60 Adults, $50 for Seniors & Military, $40 for children under 10 yrs old.
Candace was the US Lighthouse Society historian from 2016 until she passed away in August 2018. For 30 years, her work involved lighthouse history. She worked with the National Park Service and the Council of American Maritime Museums. She was a noted author and was considered the most knowledgable person on lighthouse information at the National Archives. Books by Candace Clifford include: Women who Kept the Lights: a History of Thirty-eight Female Lighthouse Keepers , Mind the Light Katie, and Maine Lighthouses, Documentation of their Past.
Not to be a nitpicker, but it is Hell Gate. Not Hell’s Gate. The Gate may be hellish, but that is just a coincidence.
