Tybee Island’s Lighthouse is the oldest and tallest in Georgia, and it’s one of the most intact historic light stations in the U.S.
The Savannah River marks the border between Georgia and South Carolina. The river was vital to the early development of the area, including the city of Savannah. A lighthouse at Tybee Island has been guiding shipping into the river since 1791. Under the guidelines of the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act, the Tybee Island Light Station became the property of the Tybee Island Historical Society in 2002.
Today, a ticket to the site allows you to tour the lighthouse tower and the other station buildings, and to visit the Tybee Island Museum across the street. The Tybee Island Historical Society’s board named Sarah Jones their new executive director in 2014.
In 2019, Sarah authored a book of historical postcards of Tybee Island for Arcadia Press.

I loved being able to climb this lighthouse and see what we could of the grounds on Dec. 31, 2020. It absolutely should be preserved, for all the war history around there as memorabilia displayed! Thanks to Sarah for keeping things up there so well. Staff was friendly and Maintained count of people in the tower for distancing. Whoever I talked to had knowledge of the site that was helpful! (We’re from MN, and visited our SCAD student between Christmas and New Years Day! He liked the beach and pavilion/dock)
Thanks very much for your comment. Tybee is one of the country’s great lighthouses, for sure!
For me, Tybee Island is the ultimate beach getaway. It’s peaceful and tranquil in nature, which I enjoy. Every time I walk down the beach front, that Lighthouse is the cherry on top! I found Georgia’s attractions while I was seeking for a new vacation spot and came across https://visittybee.com/article/history-of-tybee-island-lighthouse.
