York Days 2022: Nubble Lighthouse (ME) lighting, sailing, fireworks and more

YORK, Maine — York Days returns this month with more than a week of events and activities including a movie on the beach, 5K race, Nubble Lighthouse lighting and craft fair featuring more than 75 vendors.

This year’s York Days, which will run from Friday, July 29 through Sunday, Aug. 7, is a true return to normalcy following the worst of the coronavirus pandemic, according to York Parks and Recreation Special Events Coordinator Liz Cooper. It marks the return of movie night on the beach and live music for the lighting of the Nubble, both of which were canceled or altered in the last two years due to COVID-19.

Cruise and Dine with the Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association July 26

MACKINAW CITY — The Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association is offering members of the public a chance to see and learn about harder to reach lighthouses around the area with an event on July 26.

This dinner and cruise will leave from Mackinaw City at 2 p.m. on July 26 and take spectators to see lighthouses around the area, including Old Mackinac Point, St. Helena, White Shoal, Squaw Island, Lansing Shoal, Gray’s Reef, and Waugance.

Tawas Point Lighthouse (MI) getting much needed repairs

EAST TAWAS – The Tawas Point Lighthouse is going to get a much needed series of repairs in the next following years. For the first time since 2005, the tower will get an internal and external treatment.

Thanks to the DNR’s Phase 1 funding made possible through Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s Building Michigan Together Plan, the lighthouse is allotted $455,500 to repair water-damaged brick. The work will be completed by professionals specializing in historic architecture for maritime buildings.

WATCH NOW: A drone tour of the Barnegat Lighthouse (NJ) restoration

The Press of Atlantic City’s drone flew around Barnegat Lighthouse on the northern tip of Long Beach Island. The lighthouse, which has been there since 1859 is getting a $1.3 million renovation this year.

Wine tasting, free kids climb planned at Absecon Lighthouse (NJ)

BSECON — New Jersey’s tallest lighthouse is treating kids up to 12 years old to a free climb for National Lighthouse Day on Aug. 7.

Their parents can also enjoy a wine tasting event from 4 to 6 p.m. with six selections, Absecon Lighthouse officials said in a news release.

Community begins fundraising to restore Ned’s Point lighthouse (MA)

MATTAPOISETT – A campaign to restore one of Mattapoisett’s historical gems is underway.

The Friends of Ned’s Point Lighthouse, a nonprofit organization, is fundraising for the maintenance and restoration of the beloved lighthouse.

Local Maryland Lighthouses Celebrated During National Lighthouse Weekend

LEONARDTOWN, Md. – The Department of Recreation & Parks’ Museum Division will celebrate some of St. Mary’s County’s most significant lighthouses during National Lighthouse Weekend Saturday, Aug. 6 and Sunday, Aug. 7, 2022, at Piney Point Lighthouse in Piney Point, and Blakistone Lighthouse on St. Clement’s Island, near Colton’s Point.

Tours will be available at both locations during the entire weekend. At Colton’s Point, check out the St. Clement’s Island Museum before taking a boat ride out to St. Clement’s Island. Visitors can experience a free tour of Blackistone Lighthouse from the St. Clement’s Hundred Blackistone Lighthouse volunteers.

Lighthouses of Lake Erie: Vermilion Lighthouse (OH) is a picture-perfect recreation

VERMILION, Ohio — The Vermilion Lighthouse is the sunset celebration location for this Lake Erie shoreline community and those who visit it.

“It’s kind of the symbol of the town,” said Tim Costello, a retired lighthouse volunteer. “It’s fun to see. People head to the lighthouse all day, but particularly at sunset. You’ll see out-of-state license plates on cars and people you’ve never seen before drive up and take a bunch of pictures.

SpaceX explosion shakes Texas lighthouse

Concerns were raised about an explosion that took place on July 11 at the SpaceX Boca Chica facility during a test firing of the prototype heavy boost engine. The explosion was felt all the way out to Laguna Heights and was powerful enough to reportedly shake the Port Isabel Lighthouse. The Commission was concerned about the possibility of future explosions and questioned the prospect of future legal action in that event taking place.
