Auction still open for Penfield Reef Lighthouse (CT)

There is still time to try and buy yourself a lighthouse. The federal auction for Penfield Reef Lighthouse that started on June 21 remains active with no specific announced ending date. According to the U.S. General Services Administration, which is overseeing the sale of the historic, late 19th century structure, the agency has received two bids so far. The price started at $100,000 and was to increase in $10,000 increments. The most recent bid was for $110,000.

Tons of soil to be removed at East Chop Light (MA)

The U.S. Coast Guard plans to remove 230 tons of soil from around East Chop Light on Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, as part of a lead remediation project. One area of land adjacent to the lighthouse returned a very high finding of 16,600 ppm (parts per million) — a concentration more closely associated with soils near industrial facilities.

If you’re referring to Two Harbors Light Station near Duluth, I’m not aware of any news in the last few months. But it was in the news in June when it was relighted — see https://www.wdio.com/duluth-minnesota-news/light-restored-to-two-harbors-agate-bay-lighthouse/6129123/

We hope to feature Two Harbors on a future episode of the USLHS podcast.
