Following is an index of all episodes of the U.S. Lighthouse Society podcast, Light Hearted. Hosted by Jeremy D’Entremont.
Episode 1 – Featured is an interview with Sophie Blackall, award winning author and illustrator of the children’s book Hello Lighthouse, winner of the 2019 Caldecott Medal as the most distinguished American picture book of the year for children. Also a look at the origins of lighthouses in the world. Co-hosted by Cindy Johnson.
Episode 2 – Chad Kaiser, general manager of the New Dungeness Light Station in Sequim, Washington. Chad is also a lampist (Fresnel lens expert) and preservationist. This is part one of a two-part interview. Jeremy and co-host Cindy Johnson also tell the story of the Pharos of Alexandria, the world’s first great lighthouse, and a model for many lighthouses that followed. Jeremy and Cindy discuss a 1971 movie, The Light at the Edge of the World, starring Kirk Douglas and Yul Brynner. The film was based on a novel by Jules Verne.
Episode 3 – In this episode, host Jeremy D’Entremont is joined by co-host Michelle Jewell Shaw. A segment focuses on the ancient Roman lighthouse in Dover, England, and the ruins of the Roman lighthouse at Leptis Magna in Libya. The featured interview is with Dolly Bicknell, president of Project Gurnet and Bug Lights, the organization that cares for Plymouth (Gurnet) Lighthouse and Duxbury Pier (Bug) Lighthouse in Massachusetts.
Special Edition: Eric S. Martin, Florida Reef Lights – The entire content is an interview by host Jeremy D’Entremont with Eric S. Martin, who is president of the Florida Keys Reef Lights Foundation and a board member of the Florida Lighthouse Association.
Episode 4 – Features a conversation with Ben Swan and Gigi Lirot of Whitehead Light Station in Maine. Ben is the executive director, and Gigi is the island manager. Host Jeremy D’Entremont also interviews Catherine Bumpus, a lifelong sailor who is the executive director of the Friends of Nobska Light in Woods Hole on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. In a history segment, Jeremy and co-host Michelle Jewell Shaw discuss the Tower of Hercules, also known as La Coruña Lighthouse, in Spain. It is considered the oldest functioning lighthouse in the world.
Episode 5 – Host Jeremy D’Entremont and co-host Cindy Johnson discuss the Hook Lighthouse in Ireland in the history segment. The featured interview is with Bob Trapani, Jr. Since 2005, Bob has served as the executive director of the American Lighthouse Foundation, a nonprofit organization with its headquarters in the historic keeper’s house of the Owls Head Lighthouse in Maine.

U.S. Lighthouse Society Historian Jeremy D’Entremont is the author of 24 books and hundreds of articles on lighthouses and maritime history. He is a past president of the American Lighthouse Foundation and founder of Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouses, and he has lectured and narrated cruises throughout the Northeast and in other regions.
